Winning Partnerships

Doug DeVos: Well, I think that the partnership that Jay and Rich had, you were able to see all the way. I grew up in it. I watched it. They were neighbors. You know, we ― our families lived right next door to each other. We all played―and all the kids played with each other. It was Uncle Jay and Aunt Bets as far as I was concerned. I have a lot of people asking if we're really related and I say, "Well, kind of," in a special way. But to watch them in action as a kid growing up was one thing but, as I started working in the business, just to see them at meetings, to see them bounce ideas back and forth, I would like to just sit back and watch it and just go, "Wow." You could just see an idea thrown out. It gets better. It gets better.

Part 2

Doug: It's almost like a game of tennis just watching ― it gets batted back and forth until they agree that it's the right thing and, boom, away it goes. And I think that happens in many aspects around this company. And in the IBO organization, we talk to IBOs about ideas, and they give us their perspective and we listen and we tweak it and we give it our perspective and they listen and they change it around and toss it back. When we do that, well, that spirit of partnership can turn into taking a good idea and making it better.

Part 3

Steve Van Andel: There's also a partnership that they have with us because we do supply them with product, we do all the research on the product. The sales plan was generated by Rich and Jay. The sales plan bonuses all come from us. So, the relationship that they have with us is a critical element to their success as well. And so, if you talk about the company being the upline ― in the technical sense of the word, it's not truly an upline relationship ― but it is truly a partnership and it is a partnership that we have from company to our IBOs that is critical in the success of all IBOs.

Part 4

Doug: Well, the relationship between IBOs and the organization is absolutely paramount. You know, we are integrally involved with them and their business. We are not some disconnected, disinterested company that can survive without them. We need each other. We work together. Their success is our success.

Steve: And, with that recognition, I think you get a much closer tie with employees to IBOs because they recognize the future of the business is based on how well the IBOs do. The future of the business is based on how successful IBOs are. And so I think there's a much closer relationship with the sales side in all employees than there may be in other organizations.

Doug: And, when you have large groups of people each focused on helping another person, that's how you really know something special is going on.
