Is Amway still around?

How many direct selling companies can you name? If you struggle past one or two, you can be forgiven. It’s common for direct selling companies to have less product visibility and name recognition than traditional consumer brands because their products are not typically available in stores.

That’s why questions like “Does Amway still exist?” or “Is Amway still in business?” are not uncommon, even though Amway has been around for more than 60 years and is the number one direct selling company in the world, according to Direct Selling News.

Amway’s popular health and wellbeing products are sold exclusively through Amway Independent Business Owners (IBOs), either in person or online, so you won’t see them on store shelves or popular retail websites. Amway also doesn’t do much advertising and promotion. Instead, the company invests more in science and innovation, product traceability, supply chain and supporting the more than 1 million IBOs across the globe with free training and education.

Is Amway the same company that it used to be?

In many ways, Amway is the same company it was when lifelong friends Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel started it out of their basements in Ada, Michigan, in 1959. It was a business model fueled by the power of relationships, where quality products were sold through personal networks rather than in stores – a model they learned from their work selling Nutrilite™ vitamins and supplements.

Operating under the name Ja-Ri Corp., the pair had been active distributors for what was then a small supplement company known as Nutrilite Products Inc., rising in the ranks to be among the company’s top sellers. The Amway business model was designed largely after what they saw as the successful parts of the Nutrilite model.

They also learned to appreciate the value of providing great products to customers. Amway acquired Nutrilite in 1972, combining two companies that believed in helping people live better lives through health and wellbeing products and the opportunity to own your own business.

Rich and Jay believed that owning a business could help you reach your full potential and provide a better life for you and your family and they wanted to help others achieve those goals. They were motivated by four core principles, later named the Founders Fundamentals: freedom, family, hope and reward.

What has changed about Amway and what hasn’t

Today, company leaders, employees and independent business owners still want to help people live better, healthier lives. And they still see the Founders Fundamentals and Amway Values as guideposts. But you don’t take a business from operating out of a basement to having nearly 15,000 employees in 100+ countries and territories without adapting to the changing times.

A focus on health and wellbeing

Amway's Nutrilite brand is celebrating its the 90th anniversary this year and the company’s commitment to health and wellbeing is stronger than ever. It’s the world's #1 selling vitamin and dietary supplements brand† and the only one to grow, harvest and process its own plants and botanicals on organic farms across North and South America†.

Connecting with customers

Amway IBOs are still hard at work selling products to customers through a variety of means: online, offline, on the go, at home—whatever works best for them!

Technology has made it possible to manage the Amway business no matter where you are as long as you have a tablet or smartphone. That makes selling Amway products to customers another option for the many people out there who want a flexible way to earn a little extra income.

On social media and in person, IBOs are leveraging their creativity and fostering communities around their passions for beauty, adventure, parenting, cooking, fitness and more to sell proven Amway products that help people live a more balanced and active lifestyle.

Continuing to prioritize sustainability

Amway’s first product was Frisk Liquid Organic Cleaner Concentrate, later named Liquid Organic Cleaner or L.O.C.™. It was one of the world’s first biodegradable and environmentally conscious cleaning products.

Sustainability has been and continues to be an important part of the Amway business, including on the nearly 6,000 acres of Amway’s four certified organic farms, during product design and manufacturing and in general business operations.

For example, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recognized 40 Amway Home™ products as a Safer Choice, meaning they are safer for you, your family, your pets and the environment. And 100% of the electricity required by Amway to manufacture g&h™ products and packaging in the U.S. is offset by the company’s continued investment in sustainable wind power.* In fact, Amway World Headquarters and manufacturing facilities in Ada have incorporated wind power since the early 2010s.

A growing portfolio of high quality Amway products

The Liquid Organic Cleaner that Amway started with soon was followed by other home care products. And those were eventually joined by beauty, nutrition, sports and fitness products. Amway now offers nearly 400 proven health and wellbeing products and solutions that people around the world use every day – and they’re all backed by a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Popular brands are Nutrilite vitamins, supplements and organics; Artistry™ skin care and makeup; XS™ sports and fitness products; eSpring™ water purifiers and Atmosphere™ air filters.

Amway traceability and transparency

Amway brands are built on the belief that customers have the right to know more about where products come from and how they’re made so they can make informed choices. Traceable details give you an inside look at the steps and tests that ensure a product is pure, safe, effective and better for the planet.

Nutrilite supplements, Artistry beauty products, g&h body and baby care and Glister™ oral care contain traceable botanicals sourced from Amway-owned farms and its NutriCert™ certified partner farms. The company enforces strict visibility, quality and sustainable practices at the farms and throughout the supply chain, right down to shipping of the final product.
